Cape Fear Country Club
Owner: Cape Fear Country Club
Clubhouse architect: Chambers
Interior Design: Chambers
Contractor: Thomas Construction
Construction cost: $6.7 million
Founded in 1896, Cape Fear Country
Club is one of the oldest private clubs in
the South. A few years ago, however, the
club’s members looked to the future and
recognized that they needed to embrace
changing trends in the club industry.
;e club’s development plan addressed
dining in the ;rst phase, then added rec-
reational facilities in the second phase.
;e strategy allowed the club to establish
a solid ;nancial foothold before proceed-
ing with the second phase.
;e key element in the second phase
was the construction of a 20,000-square-
foot family activity center that houses a
tennis shop and a greatly expanded ;tness
center, along with youth rooms, a child-care facility and an ultra-casual dining
area. ;e building’s design complements
the Southern architectural style of Cape
Fear’s existing clubhouse, and its interior
colors and materials re;ect those in the
surrounding coastal plain.
What the judges said:
Kudos to this team for doing so much
with the allocated budget. ;is concept is
visionary because it considers the casual
dining and the needs of young families.
